‘Tall tales’: How former Liverpool players inspired the new movie ‘The Big Short’
Liverpool Football Club’s Brendan Rodgers and former Liverpool team-mates Adam Matthews and Jordon Ibe are among those who shared a love of tall tales during the 1980s.
Rodgers told the BBC’s The Grand Theatre in November last year that he has always had a fondness for tall tales, describing them as a “classic” that can help us see the world through different lenses.
“When you go to the movies and you see a scene and you have to say, ‘what happened?’ or ‘how did that happen?’ it’s the same sort of thing, and the way the stories work, so to speak, are very similar to the way stories work in the real world,” he said.
“You see these tall tales which are told by characters that have all the power and they’re going to be telling these stories to the world.”
That’s a great idea, and that’s something that’s been really good for me to do.
You’ve got these great characters, great characters that are telling stories that are so much more real and that they have a different way of looking at things.
“The Big Spot, an old-school film starring Jamie Foxx and James McAvoy, was released in September last year, with Rodgers telling BBC Radio 5 live that it had “been really good” and “very entertaining”.”
I’m quite sure that Jamie and James will be able to look back on it and laugh,” he told the programme.”
It’s been good, it’s been very entertaining.
You see the things that are happening and the things people are saying.
It’s really enjoyable.
It gives a different perspective on life.
“There’s a lot of people who are a bit disappointed in the film.
I don’t think that’s going to stop them laughing at it, because it’s got all these funny bits and it’s very enjoyable.”
I think a lot are going to laugh, I think a great number of people are going, ‘you’ve been a big influence on this film.’
“You’ve got all those funny bits, you’ve got some really clever things, you have a fantastic cast.”
Rodgers, who also starred in the TV comedy show The Big Fat Squad, said the idea of tall stories “always stuck” with him, and he enjoyed the film “because it had this very big message, and I’m sure people will find it very amusing”.
The Big Shout, a new short film by British actor Danny Bensimon, was filmed in December, and was filmed at the old Hollywood sign where Liverpool played their first match in 1955.
The film, which is about a group of young men, features footage from the team’s days playing the first-team in their youth.
Rodger, who starred in one of the film’s trailers, told BBC Radio 6PR that he was “very pleased” with the film and its reception.
“There was a lot more interest than I expected.
I think the reception was very good,” he added.”
The people who were watching it, they were not expecting the kind of reception that it got.
The reaction was very positive, and they really enjoyed it.”
The film is due to open on June 5 in New Zealand and is expected to be seen by an estimated 80,000 people.
